Growing Participator Approach · Phase 1 · Session 5

Fifth Session in Arabic

Until now every word has been the name of a thing or something to do with it. Today you get the words that tell two of the same thing apart: the big glass and the small one, the red apple and the green one, hot tea and cold water. Describing, not naming.

90 minwith your nurturer, same shape as before
3pairs: big / small, hot / cold, full / empty
5colours, on things you already know
~10 hrsinto Phase 1, of roughly 100

Where you actually are

What you bring into the room

Session three gave you more than the plan asked for: the numbers to six, said clean and alone when you asked for them, and a whole family of pouring — kebbi atay f l-kas, atay b sukkar, atay bla sukkar, 3tini l-ma nshreb. She also started asking sh-hal about everything on the table and expecting a number back. Session four, if it went to plan, moved the commands onto your body and gave you ana, nti, hiya, huwa.

So you can name, count, locate and hand over. What you cannot do yet is pick one of two. If she says 3tini l-kas and there are two glasses, you freeze. That freeze is where today starts.

The half hour before

Set the table in pairs

  • Two of everything that matters, differing in exactly one way: a big glass and a small glass, a big spoon and a small spoon, a big box and a small box. Same object, one difference — that difference is the word.
  • A red apple and a green apple. Plus whatever you own in clear colours: pens, paper, a towel, the bag. Five colours is enough; pick the ones on the table.
  • Hot tea in the teapot and cold water in the bottle, both poured into identical glasses. She will make you touch them. Real heat, real cold — not mime.
  • One glass full, one empty, side by side, from the pouring you learned last time.
  • Record again, phone on the table, and ask for the slow pass at the end. Name the recording Darija 5, nothing else.
  • Still no notebook, no script. Ten hours into a hundred.

The brief for your nurturer

Si me equivoco, repite y señala. No me expliques el masculino y el femenino; solo dilo como lo dirías. Al final grábame una pasada lenta de las palabras nuevas, cada una una sola vez.

English

Fifth session. As always: I listen and answer with my hands, and we write nothing. First a fast review: the numbers, "how many?", pouring tea and water. Then the new part: words that tell two identical things apart. I'll set the objects out in pairs — a big glass and a small one, a red apple and a green one, hot tea and cold water, a full glass and an empty one. You point and say the word, many times, then ask me "give me the big glass", "give me the red apple", and I choose. If I get it wrong, repeat it and point. Don't explain masculine and feminine; just say it the way you'd say it. At the end, record one slow pass of the new words, each said only once.

Ninety minutes, in order

The session

0:0015 min

Count, pour, hand over warm-up

She asks sh-hal about the glasses, the spoons, the pens, and you answer with fingers. Then the pouring commands, done for real: kebbi l-ma f l-kas, kebbi atay, 3tini l-ma nshreb. Anything still slow goes in the pile for the end.

0:1525 min

Big and small new — the core of today

Two glasses. She touches the big one: kbir. The small one: sghir. Again, again, then the same two words on the spoons, the boxes, the apples, so that kbir detaches from the glass and sticks to bigness. Then the command you have known since day one, with a word added: 3tini l-kas l-kbir. Give me the big glass. You pick one. Then 3tini l-kas s-sghir.

This is the hinge of the session. Up to now 3tini l-kas had one possible answer. Now it has two, and the extra word is the whole difference. Expect to reach for the wrong one several times; that is the word being learned.

NurturerPairs only. Same two words across every pair before any colour appears.
YouPick one and hand it over. Say nothing. Wrong is useful.
0:405 min

Break — stay in Arabic rest

Tea. Hers hot, yours as you like it — b sukkar or bla sukkar, you can answer that one now.

0:4525 min

Colours, then hot and cold new — more ways to tell apart

Same method, new axis. The red apple, the green apple: hmer, khder. Then she finds those colours elsewhere on the table — the red pen, the green towel — so the colour leaves the apple. Add three more colours only if there are real objects for them. Then 3tini t-teffaha l-hemra and you choose.

Last ten minutes: the two identical glasses, one with hot tea, one with cold water. She makes you touch each: skhun, bared. Then 3tini l-kas s-skhun. Your hand knows before your head does, which is the point.

NurturerOne colour at a time, on three different objects, before the next.
YouTouch, pick, hand over. Let the hand answer.

Full and empty, and "which one?" new — closing the loop

Two glasses, one full, one empty: 3amer, khawi. She empties the full one and the words swap — that swap teaches more than ten repetitions. Then the question that makes all of today usable: she holds up both and asks ashmen? — which one? — and names a property; you point. Ashmen kas? L-kbir. You point at the big one.

Finish by mixing axes: the big red one, the small empty one. Only if the single words were easy.

1:255 min

The clean recording capture

One slow pass into the phone, you silent: kbir, sghir, skhun, bared, 3amer, khawi, the colours she used, ashmen, then four or five of the commands with a describing word — 3tini l-kas l-kbir, 3tini t-teffaha l-hemra. Each once, with a pause after. That is Lesson 5.

What to listen for

The words that carry today

Confirm all of these with her before you start. Darija varies by family, and hers wins over anything written here. You will hear two shapes of each describing word — kbir for the glass, kbira for the apple. Don't ask why. Hear it, copy the one she uses for that object, move on.

Same rules, one shift

Hold the line

Two of a kind, always

A describing word taught on one object is just a longer name for it. It only becomes big when there is a small next to it.

One axis at a time

Size to boredom before colour. Colour to boredom before hot and cold. Mixing them comes last, and only if the singles were easy.

Copy the shape she uses

Kbir for the glass, kbira for the apple. Repeat the one you hear for that object. The pattern arrives on its own in a few weeks.

Still not the alphabet

Script belongs at the end of Phase 1. Not yet.

Nothing written

No lists, no notes, no app. The recording is the record.

No gender lesson

She will want to explain why the apple gets an -a. Thank her, hold up the two glasses, and ask ashmen?

Same day, on your own

Afterwards

+2 hoursPairs on the table at home. Play the recording and pick the one it names. Make the tea hot again; the hand needs the real thing.
EveningTen minutes on colours only, walking round the house pointing at things as each colour plays.
TomorrowOne pass over breakfast with Lesson 5 of the podcast. Note which describing word still needs a beat — that one opens session six.
Session 6The first stories: she moves things on the table and narrates what is happening, past and present, and you show you followed by re-doing it.
